From Youngstown to the World Stage: Sharon Rae North’s Musical Evolution

Sharon Rae North, a powerhouse jazz vocalist originally from Youngstown, OH, is captivating audiences and making waves in the music industry. In a recent interview exclusively with the Buckeye Review, she shared details about her exciting new ventures, her love for the golden age of jazz, and her cherished memories of her Ohio upbringing.

Her passion for giving back to her hometown is evident as she expresses her future desire to revive the “Smooth Summer Sessions” series in Youngstown, showcasing her extensive network of talented artists.

North is currently gearing up for a co-headlining tour with renowned trumpeter Rob Zinn. The tour will feature shows nationwide, beginning in January at The Tin Pan in Richmond, Virginia. North is representing the dynamic duo through a Touch of Class Productions, LLC (TOCP), a company she and her business partner Fritz Germain formed in late 2023. According to the company’s website, TOCP produces and promotes high-quality concerts at venues throughout the United States.

Looking ahead, TOCP is also exploring the possibility of securing North and Zinn for a luxurious riverboat cruise down the Seine in Paris in August 2026. Reflecting on her musical influences, North fondly recalls the golden age of jazz, a period she holds dear. “The 1920s to the 1950s—anywhere from there!” she beams. Her eyes light up as she mentions legendary musical figures like Ella Fitzgerald alongside the vibrant big-band sounds that defined the time.

“I’ve always been drawn to the voices of the golden age of jazz. Singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Nancy Wilson have profoundly influenced my style.” Her upbringing in Youngstown has also significantly shaped her artistry. She fondly recalls a time when the city fostered a strong sense of community, neighborliness, and unwavering support. Although things have changed, she expresses a genuine desire to contribute to revitalizing that spirit. One way she envisions achieving this is by potentially investing in property to create a positive impact on the city.
